Mulching Method

Mulching is one of the best low-cost techniques to improve soil health, moisture retention, and even support better resin formation in Aquilaria trees.

1. Choose the Right Mulch Material

Use organic mulch that decomposes slowly and improves the soil:

  • Rice husks
  • Coconut husks/coir
  • Dry grass/cut weeds
  • Sawdust or wood chips
  • Composted leaves
  • Crushed sugarcane bagasse

Avoid fresh green grass or leaves unless composted — they can ferment, produce heat, and harm roots.

2. Apply at the Right Distance

  • Keep mulch 15–30 cm away from the trunk to prevent:
  • Fungal attacks
  • Collar rot or trunk decay
  • Create a donut-shaped ring around the tree:
  • Radius: 30–50 cm for young trees, 1 meter+ for mature trees
  • Depth: 5–10 cm thick layer

3. Apply at the Right Time

  • Early rainy season – helps conserve early moisture and reduce weed growth.
  • Dry season – retains soil moisture and regulates soil temperature.
  • Repeat or top-up every 3–6 months as the mulch decomposes.

4. Optional Boosters

  • Add a layer of compost or goat manure under the mulch for dual benefits (nutrition + moisture retention).
  • Sprinkle Trichoderma or beneficial fungi to suppress pathogens and improve decomposition.
